Volkswagen continues to be the world's best-selling car group, with cumulative global sales of 5365300 units in the first half of this year, down 2.8 per cent. China is Volkswagen's largest consumer market, accounting for nearly 36 per cent of sales. Volkswagen sold 1916600 new cars in China in the first half of the year, down 3.9 per cent from a year earlier.

From the perspective of brands, Volkswagen brand passenger car sales ranked 2998200 in the first half of the year, down 3.9% from the same period last year; Audi brand delivered 906200 units in the first half, down 4.5% from the same period last year; Skoda brand sold 620900 units from January to June, down 4.9% from the same period last year. The Porsche brand grew, with cumulative sales of 133500 units in the first half, up 2.2 per cent from a year earlier.

Toyota Motor Group has maintained a good trend of small growth. Including Toyota Motor brand, Lexus, Dafa Industries and Hino Motor, Toyota Motor Group's global sales reached 5311806 vehicles in the first half of the year, an increase of 2.0% over the same period last year. And for three consecutive years, the highest sales in the first half of the year, narrowing the gap with Volkswagen Group.

Toyota sold well at home and abroad in the first half, rising 3.6 per cent to 1211960 vehicles in Japan and 1.5 per cent to 4099846 vehicles overseas. Among them, sales in the Chinese market rose 12.2%, and sales of the high-end brand Lexus also hit a new high. Toyota also said it plans to sell 10.76 million vehicles worldwide in 2019.

Combined alliance sales of Nissan, French car giant Renault and Mitsubishi Motors fell 5.9% from a year earlier to 5213673 vehicles. Among them, Nissan fell 7.9% to 2627672 vehicles, while sales in Japan as well as in the United States and Europe fell. Renault fell 6.7 per cent to 1938579, while Mitsubishi sales rose 5.0 per cent at home and abroad to 647422.

Nissan is experiencing the financial scandal and internal power struggle of former chairman Carlos Ghosn, and is in urgent need of reviving its performance. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2019 (April-June), Nissan's operating profit plunged 98.5% from a year earlier to 1.6 billion yen, the lowest level in history, according to the consolidated results for the first quarter of fiscal year.

With the small gap between Toyota Motor Group and Volkswagen Group in the first half of the year, if Toyota continues its growth trend and Volkswagen Group fails to improve the decline in sales, it is likely that Toyota Motor Group will eventually win the top spot in global sales.
