AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)08/03 Report--
According to foreign media reports, Volkswagen Group Americas announced that it will recall 144,092 Audi vehicles in the United States to repair the front passenger side airbag sensor failure. The recall notice was issued on July 24, mainly involving the 2018 Audi S5 and A5 models, as well as some 2017-2018 A4 models. The recall documents said oxidation of the connecting cables of the front passenger seat detection system could cause the software to fail to detect seated passengers and prevent the airbag from functioning properly.
In a complaint filed with NHTSA on May 2, an owner of the 2017 Audi A4 said: "When an adult passenger is seated, he receives a warning message 'Airbags will be off due to failure to function properly.' After a few seconds or one to two minutes, you receive another message saying that the airbag is working properly. This happens many times during a normal hour of driving, and sometimes it doesn't happen for days." The Audi owner wrote in his complaint file that the Audi dealer told him that the airbag was indeed turned off when he received the warning.
Audi has recalled 26,040 vehicles in Canada, an Audi spokesman said. The spokesman said: "This recall is due to partial oxidation of the electrical shielding surface in the cable harness, which makes the front passenger occupancy detection system (PODS) too sensitive." If this happens, PODS will detect the failure and thus keep the airbag in the OFF state even when a passenger is seated."
He added: "As designed, the warning lights on the dashboard wake up with a beep and error messages are displayed on the dashboard. If the airbag detector light indicates that the airbag on the passenger's side is switched off, the owner can contact an Audi dealership for timely vehicle inspection or repair." IEE, the manufacturer of PODS, did not respond immediately.
