AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)03/06 Report--

On March 18 last year, a Uber Volvo XC90 self-driving car collided with a pedestrian in Arizona. The pedestrian was certified dead after being taken to hospital. This is the world's first unmanned car hit and killed, which once aroused suspicions in various industries about Uber and even the whole self-driving technology.

After nearly a year of investigation, the latest development in the Uber self-driving car crash, US prosecutors announced on Tuesday that Uber was not criminally responsible for the accident in Tempe, Arizona in March 2018.

The US attorney for Yawapai County said in an open letter that there was "no basis" for Uber to bear criminal responsibility for the accident, but that the actions of Rafael Vasquez, the backup driver of the self-driving car, should be referred to the Tempe police for further investigation.

It was late Sunday night and the vehicle was a Volvo XC90, operated by Uber, a US technology company and developer of ride-hailing apps. The car was in autopilot mode at the time of the accident and there was a driver in the driver's seat. Local police said the vehicle was heading north at a speed of about 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour, while pedestrian Elaine Herzberg was pushing his bike from west to east on the sidewalk. Herzberg, 49, died after being taken to hospital.

Soon after, the US police released a video of Uber's self-driving car killing a pedestrian. From the images recorded in the car, the tester in the driver's seat did not look at the driving direction, but bowed his head from time to time until he hit the road.

Now US prosecutors have released the latest findings, saying that Uber does not bear criminal responsibility, but the behavior of the testers at that time has yet to be further investigated.

After the ber self-driving car crash, the police asked Uber to stop its self-driving car program. Then, in December, Uber resumed limited self-driving car tests on public roads in Pittsburgh.

Car automation is considered to be the general trend of the future. At present, many enterprises have joined the field of self-driving. In addition to traditional car companies, many technology companies are also developing and testing driverless vehicle technology, such as Uber and Waymo in foreign countries, Cruise division of GM, Baidu in China, etc., but at present, there is still a long way to go from the real self-driving, and for these enterprises, The current road testing process is also a very difficult stage.
