Volkswagen delivered 886000 vehicles worldwide in July, down 2.4 per cent from a year earlier, according to the latest global sales figures released by Volkswagen. China, Volkswagen's most important single market, bucked the trend, rising 1.3 per cent year-on-year, but it was still difficult to offset the weak performance in Europe and North America.

Volkswagen said that although the global car market was shrinking, Volkswagen's global car market share increased slightly in July, mainly because of the benefits of the SUV strategy. As of the end of July, SUV models accounted for 27.5% of total sales, compared with 18.7% in the same period last year.

In Europe, the Volkswagen home market, sales reached 148100 in July, down 8.8 per cent from a year earlier, while sales in western Europe fell 7.7 per cent to 125600. In central and eastern Europe, the Volkswagen brand delivered 22500 cars in July, 14.6 per cent less than in July 2018. Sales in Germany fell by 11.9%.

This is mainly due to the EU's implementation of new emission regulations in September last year, which impose higher requirements on vehicle fuel consumption and emissions, as well as a slowdown in global economic growth.

In the Americas, the Volkswagen brand sold 48200 new cars in July, down 4.1 per cent from a year earlier. Among them, the Volkswagen brand delivered 31200 new cars in July, an increase of 2.2% over July 2018, and delivery increased for five consecutive months compared with the same period last year.

In South America, the Volkswagen brand delivered 42900 new cars to customers, an increase of 2.6 per cent over the same period last year. Brazil is once again the largest single market in the region, delivering 34000 new cars to Brazil in July, up 13.5 per cent from a year earlier.

Of course, the best performer is in the Asia-Pacific region. In July, the brand delivered 239200 cars, up 0.9 per cent from July 2018. Of these, sales in the Chinese market reached 228000, an increase of 2.0% over the same period last year. From January to July this year, China accounted for more than 1/3, or about 2.23 million vehicles.

In terms of product structure, the best-selling SUV model of the Volkswagen brand in the world by the end of July is the Tiguan. In the Chinese market, the delivery volume of Volkswagen brand SUV rose from 13.9% in July 2018 to 28.8% in July 2019. In July, Volkswagen brand T-ROC, Tuyue and Tuguan all sold more than 10, 000 models in China. Of these, cross-border cars and SUV accounted for 29% of Volkswagen's sales in China, up 14% from a year earlier.

Frank Witter, Volkswagen's chief financial officer, said the share of SUV sales was expected to rise to 40 per cent by 2020. As a result, Volkswagen plans to build a full line-up of SUV products, ranging from compact SUV to full-size SUV. By 2020, Volkswagen will launch 12 new SUV models and 10 new energy models in China.
