AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)03/07 Report--
Recently, according to media reports, the management of Daimler and BMW said that the two companies hope to develop and develop industry standards in the field of self-driving cars, which will help relevant agencies to formulate regulatory rules. in order to shape the regulation of self-driving cars in the future.
Daimler and BMW management signed an agreement in February 2019 to jointly develop the next generation of self-driving cars. Executives from both sides said at a news conference at the Geneva auto show that the rising cost of developing self-driving cars forced the two sides to work together to share the financial and engineering burden.
Klaus Fletcher (Klaus Froehlich), BMW's board member in charge of research and development, points out humorously: whether it is a question of chicken or egg, but someone has to standardize technology and regulation. In addition, since fully self-driving cars do not have drivers, carmakers must bear the risk of potential liability arising from accidents, forcing the industry to set strict technical standards to make it easier for regulators to make rules.
Fletcher further pointed out that the move by Daimler and BMW is only to promote technological progress and set industry standards for cars, not just for the manufacture of a certain generation of cars, otherwise it would be a waste of resources.
"We should not repeat our investments and it makes sense to share some of these investments in the process of setting these standards," said Ola Kaellenius, a member of Daimler's board.
Executives at the two companies also said that in the next four months, a committee would be set up to select potential suppliers of advanced driving assistance systems and autopilot technology.
Fletcher also revealed that Daimler started studying autopilot earlier and invested in computer vision, from which the cooperation will benefit, which is more conducive to the cooperation between the two sides.
Next, BMW and Daimler will develop the next generation of advanced driver assistance systems for compact and large cars. Finally, the two men said that the purpose of this cooperation is to set standards, and other partners will be invited to join later.
Fleury Xi said that Chrysler is already a partner of BMW in the field of self-driving and hopes to continue to have such partners in the future.
In response, Chrysler CEO Mike Manley expressed positively that he welcomed the opportunity to continue to work with BMW to develop the next generation of self-driving technology.
