According to foreign media reports, the US Environmental Protection Agency said Volkswagen exaggerated the fuel economy of 98000 vehicles sold in the United States and agreed to compensate affected customers with $96.5 million on August 30th local time, with compensation of $518.4 to $2332.8 per vehicle to end the case.

The EPA says about 1 million Audi, Bentley, Porsche and Volkswagen cars are equipped with the software and allow transmissions to shift gears in some way during EPA emission tests. This sometimes improves fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions during testing, but not under normal driving conditions. Volkswagen determined that the software downgraded the fuel economy ratings of about 98000 cars by about one mile per gallon, EPA said.

The US Environmental Protection Agency says Volkswagen underreported greenhouse gas emissions by about 220000 tons, a problem discovered during an investigation by EPA and the California Air Resources Commission into hundreds of thousands of US cars that emit too much. Models eligible for compensation include Audi A8, Bentley Continental GT, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg, and not all Volkswagen's 2013-2017 models are included in the court settlement.

In response, the Volkswagen Group said that the fuel economy of nearly 98000 cars sold or leased by Volkswagen in the United States will be reassessed to correct the error of 1.6km per gallon. In addition, the affected car owners or car rental customers will be compensated at the rate of $5.40 to $24.30 per month. The total amount of the settlement agreement is about $96.5 million, which has been submitted to the court for review and approval.

It is worth mentioning that Volkswagen will also revise greenhouse gas emissions credits so that they can include any excess limits caused by fuel economy errors, which are currently subject to final approval by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
