According to the statistics of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, automobile production and sales in China completed 1.991 million and 1.958 million vehicles respectively in August, down 0.5% and 6.9% respectively from the same period last year. From January to August, automobile production and sales completed 15.939 million and 16.104 million vehicles respectively, down 12.1% and 11% respectively over the same period last year, and the decline still maintained double digits.

From the various series of market share announced by the association, the overall sales of independent brands declined the most. In fact, with the intensification of market competition in 2019, Chinese car brands are having a hard time. Not only do sales continue to decline, but their market share also falls below 40%, squeezed by joint venture brands, resulting in increased pressure for survival.

In the first eight months, a total of 5.178 million Chinese brand passenger cars were sold, down 19.5% from the same period last year, accounting for 38.9% of the total passenger car sales, down 3.4% from the same period last year.

Chinese brands in the car, SUV and MPV areas, sales decline, share decline, the whole line of retrogression. From January to August this year, 1.29 million Chinese brand cars were sold, down 15.4% from the same period last year, accounting for 19.9% of the total car sales, down 0.7% from the same period last year. SUV sales of Chinese brands were 2.996 million, down 20.2% from the same period last year, accounting for 52.4% of the total SUV sales, down 6.6% from the same period last year. Chinese brand MPV sold 637000 vehicles, down 25.0% from the same period last year, accounting for 74.6% of total MPV sales, down 2.2% from the same period last year.

In other series, the market share of American, Korean and French cars all declined to varying degrees, while the market share of German and Japanese cars increased.

The market share of American cars fell to 9.5% from 10.7% in the same period last year, falling below 10%, while sales of major brands Ford and Buick both fell.

French cars account for less than 1% of the market, down from 1.5% in the same period last year to only 0.7%. DPCA sold only 81045 vehicles from January to August, compared with 187101 in the same period last year, down 56.7 per cent from the same period last year. Dongfeng Renault accumulated sales of about 11300 vehicles from January to August, down 73.27% from a year earlier.

Car sales in China continue to decline, while German and Japanese cars are bucking the trend. The German and Japanese systems are selling better and better, in sharp contrast to the downturn in the car market.

From January to August 2019, the market share of German cars rose 2.2% from a year earlier to 23.8%. The share of Japanese cars rose 3.4%, with a market share of 21.7%.

The decline in car sales in 2019 is a foregone conclusion, but the double-digit decline has hit the market hard. On August 27, the General Office of the State Council issued opinions on speeding up the development of circulation to promote commercial consumption, one of which is "unleashing the potential of automobile consumption". Specific measures for the implementation of car purchase restrictions in areas should be combined with the actual situation, to explore the implementation of gradual relaxation or abolition of the purchase of specific measures; where possible, to give active support to the purchase of new energy vehicles.

The introduction of relevant targeted policies and measures is expected to alleviate the downward pressure on the automobile industry and play a certain role in promoting domestic automobile consumption.
