The passenger seat airbag in the scope of this recall is equipped with an ammonium nitrate gas generator without desiccant produced by Takata Company. During the deployment of the airbag, the gas generator of the airbag may be abnormally damaged, resulting in debris flying out, injuring the people in the car, and there is a safety hidden danger.

Solution:

Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. will replace passenger seat airbag gas generators produced by other suppliers free of charge for vehicles within the recall range to eliminate safety risks.

This recall is another recall by Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. for vehicles with Takata passenger seat airbag gas generators that were recalled in 2014 and 2015. Vehicles that were replaced with no desiccant Takata airbag gas generators at the time of the recall need to enter the store again to replace passenger seat airbag gas generators made for other suppliers.

When it comes to Takata airbags, they have been called "death airbags" in recent years, precisely because the airbags supplied by Takata Group have the problem of bursting metal fragments, which poses a great safety threat to front passenger. More than 100 people were killed and injured in 10 years. Recently, a large number of models equipped with Takata airbags will be recalled.

In January alone, the Takata airbag recall involved a total of 280105 vehicles from five joint ventures or domestic brands, including Tianjin FAW Toyota, Chery Jaguar Land Rover and Jaguar Land Rover, accounting for 43.38 per cent of the total.

Takata is the second largest manufacturer of automotive safety components in the world. Its main customers include not only Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motor and other Japanese brands, but also many well-known car companies such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, General Motors, Hyundai and Ford.

The outbreak of Takata quality problems began with a traffic accident. On May 16, 2009, an 18-year-old American girl, Ashley Paheim, drove a 2000 Honda Accord to pick up her brother from school. The car collided with another car in the school parking lot. After the airbag unfolded, the girl was cut through the carotid artery by a piece of metal ejected from the airbag and bled to death. Thus broke out so far the largest car recall incident-Takata death airbag incident.
