AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)09/18 Report--

Waymo, a Google self-driving technology company, recently submitted its quarterly report to the California Public Utilities Commission. In the first month of the driverless taxi pilot program in California, the company transported a total of 6299 passengers in driverless cars, according to the report.

Waymo is a company that develops self-driving cars and is a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. It started as a self-driving car program launched by Google in 2009, and then became independent by Google and became a subsidiary of Alphabet in December 2016.

For more than a year, Waymo has been providing travel services to more than 400 members of its early knights program, using Waymo's app to hail taxis to schools, shopping malls, gyms or other places on the outskirts of Phoenix. Waymo provided a total of 4678 passenger pick-up services in July, which means that in the first month of the self-driving taxi service, the company will provide an average of 156driverless trips a day. In addition to Waymo, AutoX, Pony.ai and Zoox have also obtained the CPUC driverless taxi pilot project license, but the distribution performance of the above-mentioned enterprises is not as good as Waymo. Zoox, for example, used 10 self-driving cars in the last quarter and provided about 70 trips for 134passengers. Waymo has made 4678 trips in just one month.

Why doesn't waymo build a car? For example, Tesla developed his own self-driving technology while developing new models, while Silicon Valley-based Zoox also said it would produce a self-driving car equipped with self-driving technology. Patrick Cadariu, head of Waymo's auto supply chain, said in a recent interview that the main reason is that "it's really difficult to build cars," and for a company with no manufacturing background, making cars may be a distraction.

In fact, Waymo, a self-driving subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, launched a bubble-shaped self-driving car called Firefly a few years ago, and it was officially deployed on public roads in San Francisco. But in 2017, Waymo announced the termination of production plans for the self-driving prototype and changed the company's development strategy and decided not to produce any more cars.
