GM plans to cut thousands of jobs after its North American plant almost came to a standstill due to the failure of negotiations with the UAW. General Motors announced on Tuesday that it would suspend production at a plant in Mexico and cut 6000 jobs, foreign media reported.

General Motors said the Mexican plant was unable to produce because of a shortage of parts caused by a strike in the United States. It is understood that the plant produces GM's high-margin Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks.

Factories in the United States and Canada also suffered losses as a result of the ongoing GM workers' strike. More than 3700 of GM's non-union employees have been suspended since the strike broke out on Sept. 16. GM then temporarily laid off more than 1200 other non-union workers in the United States and Canada, including about 525 hourly workers in Ohio and 700 hourly workers in Canada.

According to incomplete statistics, more than 10,000 non-union workers in North America lost their jobs during the strike. Not only GM's manufacturing plants will be affected, but all GM suppliers will also be affected as production lines are shut down, so the total number of workers affected is likely to be even larger.

GM's failure to reach a deal with unions by the September 14 deadline led to a strike by about 48000 union members across the United States and halted production at dozens of GM plants in North America. It is said that GM announced the closure of two parts plants and two vehicle plants in the United States by the end of the year, which angered the unions, and subsequent negotiations did not reach a consensus. It was GM's first national strike since 2007 and the largest in the United States in 12 years.

The vice president of the UAW organization said the strike was the union's last resort, but it was necessary because the two sides disagreed on a new four-year contract, demanding higher pay, better job security and higher benefits.

GM responded with substantial offers, including higher wages and factory investment: an additional $7 billion in factory investment, directly adding 5400 new jobs, higher profit sharing, and leading health benefits in the country. and $8000 per person for contract change compensation.

Not long ago, Cao Dewang, chairman of Fuyao Glass, the "Glass King", said bluntly on the program: "General Motors (factory) died in the trade union." Cao Dewang once expressed his views on the existence of trade unions in the United States, saying that the American trade union system is no longer suitable for the development of today's manufacturing industry. When setting up a factory in the United States, if a trade union is established, the Fuyao American factory will be closed immediately. I would rather not and do not allow the existence of trade unions.
