Honda said it would recall about 1.2 million Honda and Acura-branded cars in North America to replace defective driver-side airbags made by Takata.
The company said in a statement that it was aware of an accident related to defective airbags in which Honda owners were injured when the front airbag burst when it opened.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda's recall involves 1.1 million U.S. cars, while the remaining 100000 vehicles will be recalled in Canada, Mexico and Central America. It is reported that there have been 290 injuries caused by Takata airbags around the world. Takata airbags may explode when the accident is opened, followed by spraying metal shrapnel, among the 23 deaths caused by Takata airbag failure worldwide. There were 21 cases on Honda. At present, 19 automakers around the world are recalling more than 100 million cars that may have the problem.
Honda's recall includes the Honda Accord in 2001-2007 and 2009, the Honda Civic in 2001-2005, the Honda CR-V in 2002-2007 and 2010-2011, the Honda Element in 2003-2011, the Honda Feido in 2007, the Honda Odyssey in 2002-2004, the Honda Pilot in 2003-2008 and the Honda Ridgeline in 2006-2014.
The Acura brand models include the 2003 Acura 3.2CL, the 2013-2016 Acura ILX, the 2003-2006 Acura MDX, the 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL, the 2004-2006 and the 2009-2014 Acura TL, the 2007-2016 Acura RDX and the 2010-2013 Acura ZDX.
Honda said repairs to the recalled cars would begin immediately in the United States, replacing Takata airbags with airbags made by other manufacturers.
