Toyota recently unveiled its modified hydrogen-fueled model Mirai, which will be officially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 24. A new generation of Mirai fuel cell vehicles will be sold later next year, and plans to expand production capacity to 10 times that of existing models.

It is understood that Toyota launched its first Mirai model at the end of 2014, but it was sold only in California and Hawaii, where a lot of money has been spent on hydrogen stations in the past few years. The upcoming Mirai model has a great improvement over the previous generation in terms of mileage, more than 500km.

The new version of Mirai has smoother lines, more like a sedan car, and has a lower profile, longer and wider. It has internal space for five passengers, one more than the current model, and is equipped with 20-inch racing wheels.

Compared with electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles also have many advantages, such as faster charging speed and longer mileage, and hydrogen fuel cells do not produce any harmful substances when working, but according to research, at present, the proportion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in vehicles is still very small.

In the field of new energy vehicles, Toyota lags far behind Tesla and lags behind other traditional car companies in sales.

It is worth noting that Toyota began developing hydrogen-powered cars more than 20 years ago, but progress has been slow because of the high cost of materials and huge obstacles to building a refueling infrastructure. The latest technological advances have halved the cost of hydrogen fuel cell materials. To that end, Toyota will increase global production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles from 3000 in 2018 to 30000 next year and 200000 by 2025.

Although it started early, due to the material cost pressure and the obstacles of hydrogenation infrastructure construction, the progress of Toyota new energy vehicle business is also very slow in the environment that the whole hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market is not mature enough.

Toyota did not disclose the price of the new model, but said the new Mirai would be on the market as early as the end of next year, with the first batch in Japan, North America and Europe.
