AutoBeta(AutoBeta.net)10/19 Report--
GM plans to build a new range of high-end electric pickup trucks and SUV at the Detroit-Hamtramak plant, including a possible revival of the Hummer brand, starting at the end of 2021, Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter. It is understood that GM's high-end brands are currently sold as GMC, Cadillac and the third brand, while GM intends to use the Hummer brand as the third brand of its high-end electric car series.
According to the labor agreement between the automaker and UAW, the core of the project, internally known as BT1 Electric truck / SUV, is to invest $3 billion in building electric trucks and vans at the Detroit-Hamtramak plant, and a further $7.7 billion in other plants across the United States over the next four years.
Sources point out that GM's BT1 plan includes an GMC electric pickup truck and a Cadillac electric SUV, two models to be launched in 2023. In addition, GM plans to start small batch production of the first BT1 pickups by the end of 2021, and the brand will launch a performance-improved pickup in 2022.
Another person familiar with the matter said that reactivating the Hummer brand would take advantage of a widely recognized brand, but reviving Hummer is only under consideration, but a final decision has not yet been made.
It is understood that the Hummer is a low fuel consumption and durable civil multi-purpose vehicle, its design is inspired by military vehicles. GM bought the Hummer brand in 1998 and retained the Hummer brand after Grandma went bankrupt in 2009, but stopped selling it in 2010.
Mark Reuss, GM's president, told a UBS conference in June that the new electric vehicle architecture would be highly flexible, allowing the Detroit carmaker to produce a variety of body sizes and offer front, rear or all-wheel drive models. GM's Hamtrunk vehicle plant in Detroit is expected to produce about 80,000 electric vehicles a year when it goes into full production in 2024, according to sources. GM has announced plans to invest $8 billion in electric and self-driving cars and will launch 20 new all-electric vehicles worldwide by 2023.
In fact, the competition of electric pickups in the market is becoming more and more fierce, especially in Europe and the United States. In April, Ford announced a $500m investment in Rivian, an electric pickup startup that will develop an entirely new electric vehicle for Ford on its EV platform.
At present, the highest-selling pickup truck in the US market is Ford's Fmur150. Ford is also working on an electric version of Fmuri 150, which has been shown in the second quarter of this year and is expected to be launched in early 2022.
In addition, Tesla, the leader of electric cars in the United States, is also eager to try electric pickup trucks, which are expected to be officially launched by the end of 2019 and put into mass production in early 2022. Musk has claimed that the Tesla pickup will have a range of 500 miles and be able to pull 300000 pounds.
