The direction of electrification of cars is accelerating, and a number of automakers, including Volkswagen Group, are very aggressive in their investment and plans for electrification. Volkswagen is speeding up production of electric vehicles and plans to produce about 1 million electric vehicles a year worldwide by 2022, overtaking US rival Tesla and making China a key battlefield, Reuters reported.

Volkswagen is almost betting on pure electric technology. Volkswagen is expected to become the world's largest electric car maker by 2022 by revamping eight factories around the world to specialize in electric cars and licensing its MEB electric dedicated platform to other competitors, according to an executive.

According to Volkswagen's plan, it will start production of electric cars at two plants in China next year, with an annual production capacity of 600000 vehicles, specifically at two factories in Anting and Foshan. Volkswagen also said it expects to produce a total of 22 million electric vehicles by 2028, of which 11.6 million will come from Chinese factories.
